Information about Phthalates in Cosmetics
Phthalates are materials that are derived from the organic chemical phthalic acid. There are many different kinds of phthalates and they are not the same. Some of them are not cosmetic ingredients and are not allowed in cosmetics. Some are found to be safe and are allowed to use in cosmetics around the world. For example, Diethyl Phthalate (DEP) is a safe cosmetic ingredient. To date, the US FDA has concluded that the DEP is a safe ingredient in cosmetics. Because of its excellent, long-term safety record, DEP continues to be internationally accepted by global regulatory authorities for these purposes, which include EU ( 27 countries), Japan and United States.
In EU, Japan and US, the government agencies pose strict laws and regulation on the safety of cosmetic ingredients. Most cosmetic products in Hong Kong, including nail enamels, are imported from these countries and territories. They are safe and comply with the commodity safety regulation of Hong Kong and the exporting countries/territories.
